A close-up look at the Black Forest fire of June 11, 2013. This video was taken literally from as close as we could get, as the roads further on were closed except for evacuations. It shows Black Forest in relation to Pikes Peak and the start of some fire suppression activities. Black Forest Fire update June 12 2013, showing the smoke from Briargate in north Colorado Springs. The wind has shifted directions from June 11 and is now blowing to the north, towards Denver, as opposed to on June 11 2013, when it blew east towards Kansas.

Another view of the fire scene, showing the tremendous increase in smoke over the US Air Force Academy. If this wasn't a forest fire causing those huge smoke drifts there.... Well, let's just say I'd be a lot more worried. When smoke obscures my position, as here, that means the wind is coming from the West, which is the normal direction. That is in the direction of Colorado Springs, pushing the fire this way and towards the built-up areas of Rockrimmon and Garden of the Gods. There are reports of drivers there violating traffic laws to get out fast.

Quick look at the scene of the Waldo Canyon fire, showing that it is not throwing off as much smoke as it was and in fact looks rather serene. You have to look a bit closely in this video, but if you do, you will see several fires near the very top of the mountain. They cut the evacuation zone in half yesterday, now it is only West of Centennial rather than all the way to I-25. Monument is still on pre-evac status, I believe, but I would be surprised if this fire made it all the way there. There were a bunch of news people down at the end of the drive near here the past few days, but they've all left. That should tell you something about the status of the fire right there. Do you think the folks that had their houses burned down and threatened will just re-build/stay in the same spots? I bet most of them do. Some people never learn. Next year is predicted to be a worse drought out here, and that means more fires. And the arsonist, if there actually is one, is still out there.

Some shots of the current status of the Waldo Canyon fire burning just above Colorado Springs. These were shot in sequence and show that fires keep popping up here and there. The fire has stayed in the mountains above the city but is far from being extinguished.
